The artist’s childhood and youth are connected with Armenia. It was in the ancient land of his ancestors that he first felt his calling, and it was there that painting became the constant work of his life and soul.
Having completed professional training in Yerevan and Leningrad, and having touched the great heritage of the past, he decisively charted his own path in art, forever remaining true to his national roots.
An innate sense of color—open, saturated, vibrant, resonantly tense, rich in modulations—distinguishes his palette.
Turning to his favorite genres of portraiture, still life, and landscape, Ashot always finds a new pictorial and sculptural solution for the most expressive expression of the image, whether it be a self-portrait,
portraits of loved ones, still lifes with flowers and fruit, and especially landscapes, the theme of which remains Armenia.
With astonishing painterly mastery, the artist depicts mountains, trees, houses, and temples, recreating the unique appearance of his native land in blooming spring, crimson autumn, or scorching summer.
With consistent success and seeming ease, he solves complex coloristic problems, working especially masterfully in green and red.
A. Khachatryan’s talent conveys the impression of a remarkably pure, bright, and kind person, always open to admiring the beauty of nature and friendly communication.
Ashot Khachatryan was born in 1954 in Armavir, Armenia, in the Ararat Valley.
The eldest son of Hasmik Harutyunyan and Vanik Khachatryan, he has one sister and three brothers. He began drawing in childhood.
In 1973, he graduated from the Yerevan School of Decorative and Applied Arts, where he learned hot glass processing.
After two years of study in the drawing department of the Yerevan Pedagogical Institute named after Khachatur Abovyan, he moved to Leningrad in 1977.
From 1978 to 1981, he was an auditor at the I. E. Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture.
Since 1981, he has been an active participant in exhibitions in Russia and abroad.
His first solo exhibition, held in St. Petersburg in 1991, determined his future path in life – Ashot decided to devote himself entirely to art.
